I’m late. Shit! I race down the hall, praying I won’t get sent to the office. Since missing so many days this week, the teachers are already watching me like a hawk. I turn the corner, slamming into a hard body. “Ow,” I moan, rubbing my nose. A deep chuckle brings my eyes up to a smirking Ian.

“If you wanted my attention, you could have just sexted me on my call.” I blink up at him a moment, trying to understand what he’s talking about. How hard did I hit my face?

“Your what?” I ask with a nervous giggle. He reaches into his pocket and pulls out his phone, wiggling it in my face, and my giggles turn to full blown laughs. I wipe my eyes from the tears and shake my head at him.

“Do you mean your phone?” I ask incredulously. What did he call it? His call? He is seriously so weird, but I can admit it holds a hint of charm. He’s unlike anyone I have ever met.

“It’s nice to see you smile and to hear your laugh.” I look up at his ocean-blue eyes, stunned that he’s so close to me all of a sudden and that he’d say something so sweet. He has always seemed to be a little assholish. I give him a shaky smile in return, and he steps closer.

“You have a sadness in your eyes, it… it overwhelms me. I just want to make it disappear.” I hold my breath and wait for him to continue, but he shakes his head and steps back.

“I assume you rushing meant you were late for something?” I freeze before smacking my forehead. Shit, he’s right, I got off track. If the counselor didn’t want to have a ‘Is Skye suicidal today chat’ I would already be in Math.

“Yes, I’m so late. I have to get to class.” I back away and try to move past him when he grabs my arm. Tingles shoot up my spine, and I gasp at the intense sensation. Ian’s eyes darken, but he clears his throat and releases me.

“I’m in your class, I’ll come too.” He nods before turning and walking off.

We reach the class with only fifteen minutes left in the period. The teacher, Ms. Scuttle gives us a disapproving look – she could be a seagull with that beak she calls a nose – and some of the girls giggle, immediately gossiping about Ian and me. Eli frowns, glancing back and forth between us, and Nina looks hurt.

Seriously, is it a crime now to just show up with someone? I can’t wait for all these new rumors to start.

The bell rings, and Eli comes over to my desk, offering me his hand. I take it and let him guide me from my chair and to the lunchroom. He focuses on our walk and doesn’t say a word to me. Is he mad at me?

We enter the cafeteria, and Eli makes a beeline for Ian. He’s sitting with some people from the swim team, and I’m confused.
